Orientation in the Donon area

The most useful thing in planning Abri du Colbéry is to place it in the surroundings of Schirmeck, in the Lower Rhine, within the Vosgian massif and near the Donon sector. It is not in a context of high mountain pirenaica, but in a half-mountain forest where the shelter works mainly as a coat of passage and support for walking days by nearby hills and summits. From this position, the most clear geographical reference is Donon , just over 3 km, Le Petit Donon and Kohlberg which help to understand the sector's highlights and the type of itinerary that can come together here.

The logic of access in this area goes more by linking roads and forest crest than by an alpine approach. This relationship between the inhabited valley and nearby elevations means that the shelter can serve to divide a short journey, to guard itself on a long route, or to raise a day centered on the Donon's cord. It also fits with long-distance signposted routes, as the environment passes variants of the GR 5 , in addition to GR 532 and other regional paths. However, it is not appropriate to interpret this network as a guarantee of simplicity: the continuity of the itinerary will depend on the actual signage on the ground and the specific choice of links.

Water and autonomy

At this point the most important practical decision is water. The nearest source, Fontaine Guy Prayer, is about 1.35 km, an assumed distance but it is not appropriate to take for granted without checking flow and state before leaving. If the day passes through crest or links between tops, this separation can force water to be loaded from the beginning or reorganized.

As a shelter with limited information, Abri du Colbéry It is of particular interest to senderists with a certain autonomy, capable of moving with a reliable map or layout and of adapting the plan to the meteorology and resources available in the area. Its usefulness is less in the services and more in its position between Schirmeck, the long-distance trails and the summits of the immediate environment.
